Still Life with Pears and Grapes

Pears and grapes hold the whole table. Samuel Peploe built this still life around fruit set on a pale cloth, the kind of arrangement he arranged and rearranged until every shape locked into place. Nothing drifts. Everything is placed. The pears carry a buttery yellow green against skins brushed with harder orange at the edges. Grapes cluster in deep violet blue, each one a small round dab of paint catching a point of light. The cloth falls in folded planes of cream and grey, its shadows cool and deliberate. Behind, the ground sits flat and dark, pushing the fruit forward into the room. A kitchen table, a breakfast nook, a dining room with morning sun. Wherever food and conversation happen, these pears and grapes belong.
