A pair of fives rests face up on a dark board, a brass-headed Winchester ten shell standing beside it, both painted with deceive-the-eye precision by Charles Alfred Meurer. The cards wear soft handled corners, pips inked in lamp black while the red suits glow like lacquer. The shell shows pressed paper over a stamped brass base, its head catching a low raking light. Every shadow falls hard from a single source, depth coaxed out of plain darkness.
