Still Life with Milk

Milk fills a squat ceramic jug at the center of a bare wooden table, its white glaze catching flat northern light. Still Life with Milk turns a morning meal into something monumental. Cream and bone whites press against a deep umber ground, the jug built from thick, loaded brushstrokes that stay visible across the surface. A coarse cloth and a few russet apples repeat the roundness of the vessel, all worked in the blunt, sculptural oil handling that set Paula Modersohn-Becker apart from her landscape painting peers. A kitchen nook, a breakfast room, a plain pine table under a window: the picture was painted for exactly that kind of honest morning room.
