Still Life with Melon

Sliced fruit dominates the draped table, one half pushed forward, flesh pale and seeded, in Still Life with Melon by Samuel Peploe. Nothing else gets much room. Oil paint lies in thick slabs, much of it dragged on with a palette knife, and every contour is traced in black so each form reads almost carved. Grapes and a glazed dish crowd close, cool greens against warm orange, the drapery folded in broad decisive strokes. It suits a dining room or a kitchen breakfast nook, anywhere meals happen close by and morning light lands on the table first.
