Still Life with Melon and Grapes

A cut melon sits at the center of the table, its flesh a clean wedge of pale green against the rind. Around it, Peploe scatters grapes, a folded cloth, and the dark shapes of fruit that anchor the whole arrangement. The colour does the heavy lifting. Cool greens and creamy whites build the melon, while the grapes carry deep purples and blue-black skins, each one catching a small highlight. Brushwork stays thick and deliberate, laid on in short strokes that give the table surface a woven, almost embroidered texture. Shadow is handled in warm greys rather than black, which keeps the whole picture breathing. A dining room or breakfast nook suits this still life best, somewhere morning light actually falls on a table.
