Still Life with Lilac

Cut lilac branches stand bunched in a heavy vessel, clustered panicles filling the picture edge to edge. Still Life with Lilac shows Pyotr Konchalovsky at his most generous with paint. Each floret is a single loaded brushstroke, violet stacked on mauve, deep plum shadow underneath, pale lavender where light catches the tops. The leaves arrive in a few broad sweeps of dark green, and the table edge sits low and plain beneath all that weight. A sunroom or breakfast room suits it best, anywhere with morning light and plain surfaces, since the color does all the talking and asks nothing of the space around it.
