Still Life with Lemons

Three lemons hold the whole picture. Cuno Amiet paints them close, almost confrontational, their yellow skins catching light against a darker ground so the fruit reads first as shape and only then as subject. The brushwork stays loose and loaded. Dabs of chrome yellow and greenish ochre build each rind, the dimpled texture of citrus suggested rather than traced. Around them the table surface tilts forward, a muted field of gray and violet shadow that keeps the eye circling back to the fruit. A kitchen done in soft whites, a breakfast nook, a hallway that needs one bright note. Swiss modernism at this scale suits small rooms and bold ones alike.
