Three fruits sit close together in Still life with lemon, orange and tomato, the composition Paula Modersohn-Becker pared to color, shadow and a hard table edge. Yellow goes on in loaded, unhurried oil strokes, skin built up thick where light strikes it. Behind, the ground sinks into umber and bottle green, so the red fruit burns at the center like a coal. Outlines stay blunt and each contour is stated with a directness that ran ahead of German expressionism.
