Still Life with Jug

A squat earthenware jug commands the center of the table, rounded belly turned toward the light. Still life with jug shows Paula Modersohn-Becker working at her most direct, paint piled high and certain. Loaded brushstrokes leave thick ridges of ochre and brick red across the clay shoulder, each mark left raw on the surface. A dark contour presses the vessel forward. Mossy green and a pale cloth cool the tilted plane behind. In a kitchen nook or dining room the earthen warmth settles in, though a study shelf or hallway carries it just as well.
