Still Life with Fruits

Fruits pile toward the edge of the table, skins catching light in blunt planes of green and rusted orange. Arthur Segal built this still life from assertive brushwork, each apple and pear given weight through thick, directional strokes rather than smooth blending. Behind the fruit the background stays shallow, pressed close, so the forms read almost in relief. The palette runs earthy, ochre and olive against dark shadow, with highlight color laid on wet and left visible. A kitchen or dining room earns the company of something this direct.
