Still Life with Fruits and Watermelon

Sliced melon rules the table. Crimson flesh spills across rumpled white cloth, ringed by grapes, peaches and plums stacked in a careless heap. That abundance is the entire argument of Still life with fruits and watermelon. Konchalovsky loaded the brush like a trowel. Ridges of oil pigment stand off the surface and catch the light; every seed sits in wet pink, a black glass bead. The rind turns jade and bottle green; behind it all, a dark slate ground shoves the whole arrangement forward. It belongs over a sideboard in a dining room, or in a breakfast nook, where painted appetite meets an actual one before coffee.
