Still Life with Fruit

Apples, pears and plums crowd the foreground of this still life by Magnus Enckell, their skins catching a cool northern light that turns each highlight into a small pale coin. Enckell paints fruit as architecture: the round apple sits heavy at the base, pears lean against it, and a knife blade flashes where it cuts the composition in two. Greys and muted greens dominate, so a single plum reads almost violet against them. Brushwork stays tight around the fruit, loosening into dry, scrubbed strokes across the shadowed tabletop. A kitchen, pantry wall or breakfast nook with pale wood and linen would let these cool Finnish tones breathe.
