Still Life with Flowers

A gathered armful of blooms holds the center of this still life with flowers by Istvan Nagy, the Hungarian painter with a feel for rural quiet. Stems lean at easy angles, petals opened wide, leaves curling where the brush thins them to a single stroke of green. The palette runs earthy: deep russet against mossy green, cream highlights pressed thickly onto shadowed blooms. Nagy models each flower with short, confident dabs of paint, letting the dark ground swallow the edges so the bouquet seems to surface from dusk.
