Still Life with Flowers and Fruits

Dahlias and ripe apples crowd the tabletop in this still life with flowers and fruits by Suzanne Valadon, the French painter who built form from bold, unblended planes of color. Petals go down thick in vermilion and rose, plums and pears carry cool green highlights, and the patterned cloth tilts toward the viewer so everything presses forward, nearly flat. Heavy black contour locks each shape, the drawing showing through the paint. Set it in a dining room or a sunlit kitchen nook, anywhere meals and cut blooms already share the light and the appetite.
