Still Life with Fish Bowl

A round glass bowl holds two goldfish in green water, set on a dark table. Paula Modersohn-Becker paints Still Life with Fish Bowl in heavy, unblended strokes. Ochre and umber dominate the ground, the table tilted forward in the flattened manner of German expressionism. Oil paint lies thick on the surface, dark contour lines pressing around each form. Orange bodies glow against olive green, while pale highlights trace the curved rim. At home in a kitchen or dining room, where earthy browns and that single flare of color answer warm wood, linen, and low morning light.
