Still Life with Earthenware Dish

A brown earthenware dish anchors the table, its glazed curve catching light beside fruit and a white cloth. Pierre Bonnard built this still life from thick, unblended strokes, letting ochre, violet and green vibrate against one another. Look closely and the paint does the work of the objects. The dish is not drawn so much as kneaded into being, dabs of rust and cream stacking until the glaze reads. Fruit beside it burns in orange, while the table tilts forward in the loose, intimate perspective Bonnard favored.
