Still Life with Coffee Pot

A brown earthenware coffee pot anchors the table, its rounded belly catching light along one glazed flank. Beside it sit a pale bowl, a knife laid diagonally, and fruit in muted reds and greens. Roger Fry builds the scene from deliberate planes of color, each object reduced to its essential mass. Shadows pool in cool blue-grey beneath the cloth, and the background holds a quiet green that pushes every vessel forward. The brushwork stays visible and honest, closer to Cezanne construction than to polished salon finish. A kitchen or breakfast room with plain timber and daylight suits its unpretentious gravity.
