Still Life with Carnations

Carnations crowd a shallow vase in this still life by Swiss painter Cuno Amiet, their petals built from thick, deliberate strokes of crimson and rose against a quieter ground. Look closely and the paint sits in ridges. Each bloom carries its own weight, some fully open, others tightened into buds, while stems cross in green and grey beneath them. The table edge tilts gently, a habit Amiet kept from his years among the French avant-garde, and the background holds a muted field of ochre and slate that pushes the flowers forward. A dining room or breakfast nook gives these blooms their natural setting, though a hallway console would serve them just as well.
