Still Life with Cabbage

Cabbage, painted at heroic scale, rules the table. Pyotr Konchalovsky of the Jack of Diamonds circle lets the leaves curl open, a peony gone feral, and his Still Life with Cabbage reads as portraiture, not pantry study. Oil paint sits thick on the surface, ridges of loaded brush dragging white over green so each leaf vein catches light like wet ribbon. Beside it stand a squat stoneware jug, two onions, a knife laid flat, all braced against a deep olive ground. A farmhouse kitchen with stone counters and morning steam, or a dining room where bread is torn by hand, gives these greens their proper company.
