Still Life with Brass

Brass dominates the table in Still Life with Brass, a still life by Maurice Louis Monnot. Warm metal catches the light first; everything else arranges itself around that glow. A polished jug and a shallow basin sit against a darkened ground, their surfaces throwing back amber and honeyed reflections. The brushwork follows each curve, building the metal through layers of ochre, umber and gold so the highlights read almost molten. Deep shadow behind the vessels pushes their gleam forward, a classic French realist trick handled with quiet patience. Suited to a dining room or a kitchen with wood and copper tones, where its burnished palette can settle in comfortably.
