Eggs gather at the foot of a tall vase crowded with garden blooms, set on a tabletop that tilts toward the viewer. Frances Hodgkins gives the scene its title, Still Life with a Vase of Flowers and Eggs. Eggshells glow chalk white against a background washed in pale blue and cream. Petals open in rose, butter yellow and violet, their edges held by a firm dark contour. Brushwork stays loose and quick, gouache and watercolour layered until the table plane flattens into pattern.
