Still Life with a Towel Hadji-Murat

A linen towel hangs over the edge of a dark table, its woven band lettered Hadji-Murat, the whole still life arranged by Eugene Lanceray around that single strip of household cloth. Cream cloth fills most of the sheet, the name worked letter by letter into the band, fringed ends trailing over the edge. Beside it sit a squat earthenware jug and a bowl of dark fruit. Washes of oatmeal and ochre carry the light, with umber pooling in the jug shadow and pencil lines ghosting underneath. Suited to a kitchen doorway, a breakfast room, or a reading corner stacked with Tolstoy volumes, where plain cloth and crockery become subject.
