Still Life with a Silver Goblet

A silver goblet catches the light at the center of the table, its polished bowl throwing back pale reflections while fruit and draped cloth settle around it in Still Life with a Silver Goblet by Henri Manguin. Manguin paints in loose, generous strokes of fauvist color: bruised pears, a deep blue shadow pooling beneath the goblet base, highlights scraped in with the edge of the brush. The silver reads almost liquid where the light hits it, cooling to gray steel in the shade. Fabric folds fall in broad planes of rose and cream, keeping the composition airy despite its weight of objects. Suited to a dining room or a kitchen with good daylight, where the goblet can gleam off a wall near the table itself.
