Still Life with a Jug

The squat clay vessel anchors everything: Pyotr Konchalovsky built Still Life with a Jug around its swelling body, one handle sunk in shadow, the tabletop pressed close beneath. Thick oil impasto gives the earthenware its weight, terracotta and raw umber dragged in broad strokes so the glaze catches light from a window just out of view. Behind it, slate blue folds of cloth and a scatter of apples in dull reds complete the arrangement. A kitchen or dining room with stone counters and open shelving matches its earthen palette; a study stacked with books suits it just as well.
