Still Life with a Jug and a Bowl of Apples

A squat stoneware jug and a bowl heaped with apples anchor this still life, painted by Samuel Peploe with the flat colour planes and hard black contour of the Scottish Colourists. The paint sits thick. Each apple is a rounded dab of red or green edged in dark line, and cool white glaze picks up the light along the jug while blue shadow pools beneath its base. The tilted table pushes the fruit toward the viewer against deep green. It belongs in a kitchen or dining room, among honest crockery and morning light, and a breakfast nook could hardly ask for better company.
