Still Life with a Fly. Every Victuals

A fly has claimed the centerpiece, settled right where the bread is thickest. Still Life with a Fly. Every Victuals shows Pyotr Konchalovsky treating a plain Russian table like a banquet. He loads the paint on thick, so the loaf crust rises in ridges of ochre and burnt umber. A pewter plate throws back one hard highlight, fruit skins carry russet and green, and the insect reads as a single dark speck against all that plenty, a wry memento mori. It belongs in a kitchen or dining room, above a table where cooking matters, alongside copper pots and open cookbooks, in a house that takes its meals seriously.
