Still Life with a Box

A lidded box sits closed on a bare tabletop, painted by Józef Pankiewicz with the restraint that made his still lifes so quietly radical. Nothing is arranged for drama. The object simply occupies its patch of light. Pankiewicz built the surface in muted olive, warm umber, and greyed ochre, letting the brush drag and turn where wood grain and shadow meet. The box itself carries the weight of the composition, its edges softened by diffused interior light, its dark mass set against a pale, almost chalky ground. Loose, visible brushwork in the background keeps everything breathing rather than polished.
