Still Life with a Bowl of Fruit, Bottle, Cup and Glass

Pears, apples and grapes crowd a pale bowl at the centre of the table. Around them Samuel Peploe arranges a dark bottle, a small cup and one clear glass, each object tilted toward the light. The fruit carries the colour. Russet skin against green, a bruised purple in the grapes, all set down in thick, confident strokes of oil paint. Behind, the background flattens into blocks of muted blue and cream, so the bottle reads as one solid dark shape and the glass as a few bright slashes. Nothing is fussy. Every form is reduced, then rebuilt in colour. A dining room or breakfast nook wants this kind of picture nearby, something with appetite and order in equal measure.
