Still Life. Wildflowers

Cornflowers, oxeye daisies and two scarlet poppies jostle in a plain jar: Still Life. Wildflowers, Pyotr Konchalovsky painting the roadside meadow straight onto the table. Paint lies on in thick impasto. Single loaded strokes build each white petal; the blue heads settle in as dense dabs of cobalt. Stems cross at casual angles behind the glass, and the table tilts forward in warm ochre under a muted grey-green ground. A kitchen nook, a sunroom, the far end of a country hallway: wherever cut grass and open July air still feel close, the bouquet settles right in.
