Still Life, White Roses

White roses packed into a dark glazed vase command the picture plane, petals loaded on thick so each bloom catches real light. Samuel Peploe built the arrangement on a bare tabletop where nothing competes with the flowers. Pebble grey shadow pools beneath the vase. Stems press against a cool blue ground, crooked and unidealized, some heads already loosening toward the table edge. Brushwork stays blunt and deliberate, blacks and greens cut in without blending, the whole surface keeping that oily, hand pressed texture oil paint leaves behind. A dining room or hallway with pale walls suits it best, somewhere the whites can breathe against clean plaster.
