Still Life. White and Red Lilac

White and red lilac masses into one towering bouquet in this still life by Pyotr Konchalovsky, the Russian painter who gave a spring armful the weight of architecture. He loads the brush and lays petals on in thick ridges, white clusters cooling to pale green where shadow cuts across, red trusses running toward magenta at the edges. Dark leaves wedge between the blooms, and a squat glazed jug anchors the whole overflow to the table. Set in a breakfast room or over a hallway table, the flowers keep their late May freshness through every month of the year.
