Still Life. Tray and Green Cardboard Box

Light slides across a sheet of tin, and a box in bottle green cardboard sits closed beside it, lid down. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the scene plainly: Still Life. Tray and green cardboard box. Oil paint lies thick, strokes laid in short angled blocks, the method Cezanne handed to the Jack of Diamonds painters. Moss greens and warm ochres divide the tabletop, metal holding a cool grey sheen while the cardboard stays matte, swallowing light without returning it. A kitchen or dining room suits it best, set above oak counters and copper pots where honest objects already collect. It rewards long, unhurried looking.
