Ripe red fruit heaps across coarse sacking in Still Life. Tomatoes on the Bag, Pyotr Konchalovsky giving the scene a title as blunt as the subject itself. Oil paint lies thick. Each globe carries vermilion and madder in ridged, visible strokes over a dull ochre ground, while the sack comes up in dry, crosshatched drags of tan and grey. Green calyxes and pooled shadow seat everything, the group tilted forward in Cezannesque blocks. A kitchen wants it, or a dining room with bare wood tables and white crockery, anywhere food is cooked and eaten rather than merely arranged.
