Still Life. The green glass

A green glass holds the center of the table, its thick walls drinking the light. Pyotr Konchalovsky builds the whole still life around one modest vessel and nothing else. Oil sits heavy on the surface, laid in slab-like strokes of viridian and moss where the shade deepens. One cold highlight rides the rim. Around the tumbler the table tilts forward, its brown plane brushed in broad, confident sweeps, the background pressed down to near black. He gave humble crockery the gravity of monuments. A breakfast nook, a country kitchen, or a pantry doorway in morning light would suit the picture down to the ground.
