Roses, tulips, and convolvulus spill over the rim of a dark glazed urn in Still Life. The Dutch bouquet, Pyotr Konchalovsky working in open homage to the seventeenth century flower masters. Thick oil paint piles onto every petal, each rose head twisted at a different angle, red poppies burning against a near black ground. Heavy leaves knot the stems while one white iris cools the heat, the whole mass swelling far wider than the vessel beneath it. A dining room or entry hall with wood paneling and low lamplight gives the arrangement the deep shadowed backdrop it asks for.
