Roses, peonies and blue irises crowd a footed vase until the blooms outweigh the vessel itself. Pyotr Konchalovsky named it Still Life. The Dutch bouquet, and the seventeenth century answers in every fat-petaled cluster. Paint goes on thick and directional, every head of the arrangement built like small sculpture rather than detail. Shadow swallows the background while scarlet petal and ivory blossom catch the light, the old Baroque device of forcing all seasons into a single armful. A dining room in low evening light suits it, or a hallway where guests meet color before anything else. Abundance was the point; let the space keep up.
