Pears, apples and a small blue bowl sit close to the edge of a white-clothed table, painted by Suzanne Valadon with the blunt confidence she brought to everything she touched. The fruit carries real weight. Greens deepen into olive and yellow, shadows sit hard against the cloth, and every contour is outlined in the dark, deliberate line that separates her work from the soft still lifes of her contemporaries. Nothing floats. Each form is anchored, built up in firm oil strokes with visible texture in the paint surface.
