Still Life. Strawberries

Ripe berries brim over a shallow white dish, red laid on so thick it stands proud of the surface. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the picture plainly, Still Life. Strawberries, and painted exactly what the words promise. Each seed reads as a single pale dab, calyxes still green and splayed. A folded cloth with blue striping runs beneath the dish, its shadow cool grey. Loaded strokes build the fruit square and deliberate, closer to Cezanne in structure than to salon polish. It belongs in a kitchen or breakfast room, somewhere morning light lands first, where plain cabinets and linen let that garden scarlet carry the whole corner.
