Still Life. Shell and Apples

A ridged seashell tips on its side beside two apples, the entire subject Eugene Lanceray chose for a still life set on a bare tabletop. Nothing else competes for attention. Nacre pinks and creams glow inside the chambered spiral while the fruit carries russet skin blushed toward green, all set against a smoky grey ground. Light falls from one side, pooling shadow beneath them and leaving the brushwork thin and visible, as if painted in a single sitting. Hung in a kitchen with stone counters or a dining room lit by low evening lamps, it rewards the kind of quiet looking that ordinary meals rarely allow.
