Still Life: Self Portrait

A teapot, a jug, a scatter of fruit, and behind them, the ghost of a face looking back. Frances Hodgkins folds self portrait into still life, letting objects do the talking while the artist hides among them. Painted with the loose, angular brushwork of her later years, the composition tilts and stacks: vessels crowd forward, color runs from mustard and teal into deep umber, and every outline is redrawn until it hums. Gouache and watercolor textures give the surface a chalky, hand worked quality. Hang it where conversation happens, a dining room or a hallway that guests linger in.
