Still Life

A blue ginger jar and a dish of fruit hold the centre of the table, set on a pale cloth. Samuel Peploe arranges the Still Life with almost geometric care. Oil paint sits thick on the surface, cadmium orange pressed against deep ultramarine, one dark shadow anchoring each apple. The Scottish Colourist keeps the background nearly black so the fruit and crockery advance. Contours are redrawn and strengthened until the whole composition locks. A dining room or kitchen table suits it, anywhere daylight can answer the painted kind. It rewards a close look, where every brushstroke shows.
