Still Life

Coffee pot, blue bowl, scattered fruit: the table in Samuel Peploe Still Life is set out like a stage, every object placed at full attention. Peploe builds the arrangement from firm black outlines and planes of unmodulated colour, the Scottish Colourist method applied to a humble kitchen table. Cerulean shadows pool under the bowl. Green apples and a sliced melon sit against a cloth rendered in thick, deliberate strokes, the paint handled almost like mosaic, each block distinct. The composition holds its balance through contrast: cool against warm, round against angular, white against dark. A dining room or kitchen breakfast nook suits its clarity and appetite.
