Still Life

Apples, a jug, and a folded cloth sit close together on the table, nothing more. That plainness is the point. Peploe builds the whole picture from the weight of ordinary things. The fruit reads in flat planes of red and green, each apple tipped with a single highlight. Behind them the jug rises in cool blue grey, its handle drawn in one confident dark stroke. The table tilts toward the viewer, painted in thick cream and ochre, and the background stays a shallow green so every object pushes forward. Brushwork is visible everywhere, laid on wet and left alone. A dining room or kitchen shelf suits it best, somewhere food and light are daily matters.
