Still Life. Roses on a yellow background

Roses crowd forward against a blazing yellow ground in this still life by Pyotr Konchalovsky, blooms heaped so thick in the bowl that leaves barely show between them. Impasto ridges hold the light, each petal built from vermilion, crimson and cream with a loaded brush, while the flat saffron backdrop reads almost like glazed enamel. Violet shadow pools beneath the stems, and the tilted tabletop pushes the whole bouquet toward the viewer. Hung in a dining room or sunlit breakfast nook, the golden field warms a pale wall and gives cut flowers somewhere to live all year.
