Still Life. Roses on a Lace Napkin

Roses crowd a lace napkin in this still life by Pyotr Konchalovsky, garden blooms heaped so high the wood beneath all but vanishes under crimson and pink weight. Oil paint sits thick across the surface, each petal built from loaded strokes of carmine, madder and cream. Jagged leaves wedge between the heads in deep green. Beneath, the linen opens into a lattice of loops and scallops, its openwork flicked in quick white touches over grey shadow. A dining room or reading nook suits it best, anywhere meals linger and cut flowers from the garden share the table with the good china.
