Still Life, Roses and Apples

Roses crowd a shallow bowl while two apples sit beside them, one green, one flushed with red. Samuel Peploe arranged them with a florist eye and a painters discipline. The roses are built in thick, buttery strokes of pink and cream, each petal turned by a single loaded brush. Behind them the ground shifts from warm ochre to cool grey, so the fruit reads almost sculptural. The apple skins catch a hard little highlight, cool as a windowpane. A still life like this earns its place above a dining room sideboard or a kitchen breakfast table, anywhere food and flowers already live.
