Still Life, Red Roses

Red roses fill the foreground, packed tight into a dark glazed vase that pushes every petal forward. Peploe builds the arrangement in thick, deliberate strokes of vermilion and carmine, each bloom distinct against a shadowed interior. Behind them, a pale cloth folds across the table, its cool whites and blue greys keeping the composition steady. The leaves cut in deep green, almost black at the edges, and the whole surface carries the buttery texture of oil paint laid on with a loaded brush. A still life this saturated wants a dining room or a sitting room with plain walls, where the red can hold the room on its own.
