Still life

Pears, apples and a squat ceramic jug crowd a wooden table, built with the heavy brushwork Pyotr Konchalovsky brought to every still life he set up. Fruit sits dense and weighty, skins laid on in loaded oil paint where green slips into blush along one apple. The cloth behind folds into dark umber and slate, the jug neck catching a single pale highlight. Objects tilt toward the viewer in the Cezanne manner, stacked for weight rather than grace. A kitchen with open shelves, a pantry wall, a breakfast room in morning light: anywhere food and appetite belong to the decor.
