Still Life

Piled fruit dominates the tabletop in Still Life by Pyotr Konchalovsky: apples with bruised crimson skins, a split pear, dark plums heaped beside a squat glazed jug. Paint sits thick and loaded, ridge after ridge of impasto catching light along every curved flank. Ochre tablecloth folds rise in broad crosshatched strokes, and the jug glaze slips from cobalt into deep viridian where shadow pools. Each apple carries real weight. He painted abundance the way a cook plates a feast, and the picture earns its keep in a dining room or kitchen, wherever appetite and color share a table.
