Still life

Apples shoulder a dented pewter jug, their skins built up in fat dabs of vermilion and moss green. Pyotr Konchalovsky turns pantry fruit into monument in his Russian still life. Oil paint sits in slablike impasto, a knife dragging pale highlight across each curved side. The tabletop tilts forward, Cezanne fashion, while a rumpled white cloth drops cool blue shadow onto warm ochre ground. Two pears hold the left edge, stems bent like ink strokes. A kitchen or dining room gives it company, copper pans and glazed crockery continuing the conversation, supper close enough to taste.
